New York's beach plums

It will be hit or miss. Purple is hit, green is miss.

We are on our way to find beach plums (Prunus maritima). I took careful note of some promising subjects in the spring. With the season skipping anything from 2-10 weeks ahead of schedule I am hoping that we find them on their way to ripeness.

And then?

Jam, yes, gin, yes, crumble, yes, perhaps even... But I must not get ahead of myself.

Think purple thoughts.

  1. So are these little fruits like sloes? Only sweeter? I'm not familiar with them. I do like making sloe gin however... :)

  2. I should have scouted for you yesterday. So selfish am I.

  3. Jelli, I've never tasted the sloes (Prunus spinosa, I think), but these are Prunus maritima. Sweet when ripe.

Fwank - Plums were a bust, but the choke cherries were a' rockin'!
