It seems to have been a very long time since I ate at Prune. I used to trot over there from the office for lunch quite often, but when the menu stayed the same for over a year I gave up. Which was very good for my wallet. It's not expensive, per se [which IS very expensive}, but accumulated lunches out make themselves felt.

My mom and Vince joined me in the middle of my day and since Prune is a skip from work it was the natural choice; next time we'll go to Inoteca.

Some stone crab claws arrived as a present and were delicious. Cold, dipped in  hot butter and tabasco.

Unapologetic fare.

To start I had what was billed as James Beard's onion sandwich with chicken livers. Presented as a crusts-off, triangular wonderbreadwich, with mayonnaise inside and the long side dipped into chopped parsley. The livers were off on one end on the long plate, dipped  into a tempura-like batter and fried, still pink inside. A revelation. Yum, yum, yum.

More crab claws as our main course and Vince had the peerless burger on an English muffin with super-crisp yet soft-inside French fries.

I suppose the lesson is that anything becomes boring after a while. A particular thing, good every day, is no longer good on the umpteenth day. Being unspoiled and ready for more involves abstinence, if you haven't the means, or a holding back, if you do. How can the rich be happy unless they are very, very disciplined? How accessible boredom must be.

I don't think of myself as a dessert person But when the waitress said brandied cherries I was hooked. And then she said battered and deep fried. Weird. I had to have them. Came on a little pile of sugar and shaved chocolate. Piping hot.

  1. Endless plasters of crab that's my idea of heaven. I'm salivating right now just looking at that your picture.

  2. Oooh this makes me hungry and those deep fried cherries look exactly like Rhode Island clam cakes!

  3. Clearly, your *standards* are impeccable!
