Mulberries in my bowl

Problem with mulberries is that when you pick the fruit the short green stalk comes with it. So I detach each one painstakingly back in the kitchen. Yes, you could just eat the stalk. But I don't like that blunt interruption, so I spend some time removing them. Purple fingers.

Worth it, though.

Black mulberries, straight up. The sugar was overkill, but I needed its grit between my teeth to dissolve in that black juice. A private date with memory.

  1. Do you have a picture of a mulberry tree? I think we have one on our block. My son and I are debating what it is. He says mulberry. I still won't let him eat the fruit until I have a confirmation. Just in case.

  2. Morus stems... something to mull over. I did see a Morus alba laden with fruit yesterday and my hand lingered in the air over a plump white berry. I will go back in a few days.

  3. I do Amber, but I'm sure Google does, too. Are you on Facebook? Foragers Unite and Wild Edible Plants are two useful groups for wildish food...

Janet - Some of the berries are good, some are insipid. Funny how it goes.

  4. We had an absolutely giant mulberry tree in our back garden in Jhb when I was growing up. Every year I used to climb the tree to pick the berries at the top (competing with the birds), while my mom and sister climbed under its branches and picked those within reach from the ground (competing with our dalmatian). When my mom did alterations on the house, she built AROUND the tree. It is what I miss most from my childhood home. Thank you for reminding me of the glorious pink stains x

  5. Psst, Amber, there's mulberry-on-tree photo on 66's Facebook page.

Rosie, lucky you...I miss a giant tree with giant fruit in Mrs Newton's house on Waverley Road in Bloemfontein. My parents played tennis there, and my mom also bought eggs from her once a week. I would head straight for the tree in mulberry time. Purple feet.

  6. I could have been a ballerina!
All thwarted by the giant Mulberry tree in the garden of the Anglican Church Hall. Purple fingers. Purple ballet slippers. Very angry teacher.

  7. I am too lazy, I eat the green stalks with the mulberries. Additonal fiber. ;-)

  8. I have a place that I hike with my kids. One day they got all purple-y because of some berries. I did some searching and discovered only later that these were mulberries. I can't wait until next year. We will forage and eat them.

  9. I can't imagine de-stemming all those berries! I'm WAY too lazy for that. In fact, mulberries almost never even make it to my kitchen - they're too tasty right off the tree.
