Edible gardens

Over in the Garden section of AOL's Shelterpop, my piece on edible gardening is up. With a long list of edibles, detailed information was impossible to give - I hope a brief overview is enough to whet the interest of casual gardeners who would not typically plant these things...Many thanks to Thomas at A Growing Tradition for use of his picture of beautiful carrots!

  1. I am wondering about the size pot for the highbush blueberries? A couple came to J&L last week looking for a pot for a bush. I had seen many on rooftops in the past, but wasn't around long enough to see how well they do. I suggested 16-18 minimum depth, preferably 22-24.

    Thoughts?

  2. I've had them in long planters, 20" wide by 18" deep for 4 years on one roof...Long-long-term, no sure.

  3. Lets consider 4 years long term.

    As for nicotiana, I haven't planted it. I avoid it because I always heard that it harbored the diseases of tomatoes. I was told cigarettes are a no no for this reason too! Forget your lungs, think about the tomatoes.

    Should I photograph at the nursery? -they got em rather unflatteringly in cel-paks. I'm not sure my camera can overcome those odds.
