Happy dog memories

Forgive me for the sentimental journey, looking back at some pictures of good times we had with Ben. He loved water, as you will see. In the sea he would dunk his head underwater to catch the kelp I threw for him. He charged into the breakers to fetch, and tolerated Ted the corgi nipping at his shoulders as he tried to forge ahead. Ted looks for him, now. Up to two years ago he still went to the beach with us, and after that he grew too sore and stiff, afterwards. Lately he would go into the dining room, where my father has turned the huge old stinkwood table into his desk, and would put his head heavily on my father's knee. My father will miss that.

[Here is Vincent's tribute in pictures to Ben.]

  1. Our dog Blossom was crabby with Daisy, but when she was gone, he was disoriented. He slept in odd places and waited at the door for her to come home.
I didn't see any photos on this post. I'm very sad for your Dad. When our dog friends leave, there's a big gap left behind.

  7. Color him chocolate and he could be Mocha. Only a lab would choose to lie in the sprinkler. A lovely tribute to a great friend.

  8. Oh, those Labs leave a bit empty hole when they're gone. Ben was a handsome fellow, and well-loved. What can be better than that? Sending our thoughts your way, and to your Mum and Dad in Capetown, too.

  9. Wonderful tribute. Losing a pet is like losing a part of the family.

  11. Beautiful words and photographs from both you and Vincent. My garden club had the treat of visiting your mom's exquisite garden in October last year and I remember Ben's strong wagging tail against our legs. I LOVE the photograph of your dad and Ben. Sincere condolences to him, your mom and both of you.

  12. Oh Marie, what a wonderful tribute. I loved seeing the photos of younger, more active Ben and I will always treasure my memories of older Ben, with whom I fell in love at first sight. Memories of marrow bones.

  15. The gap of a much loved pet and friend is horribly empty; I loved that photo of your father and Ben you posted a while back - he looked like a wonderfully fine creature.

  16. Oh dear. I made it past the news of his passing without crying but the tribute was too much.
