Of small Sunday things

The oaks across the road are flowering.

Can you spot my Sunday nemesis on the chimney of the new townhouses, behind the branches? He has been singing since dawn, and is very good at impersonating (imbirdinating?) car alarms. Trilling and rilling and rolling and...never shutting up. Very beautiful at times and very annoying just 30 seconds later.

Mockingbird, trying to impress somebody, and bossing the other birds away. Not a peep from the robin.

It is a fragile blue day. The terrace looks very pretty and full of promise.

I was hoping for weather like this on Tuesday, when I'll meet Amy, Estorbo's over-qualifed cat sitter No. 1, for lunch, here. It would have been nice to sit on the terrace, but there are clouds in the forecast.

The strawberries have begun to bloom.

And lower, in the shadier bits, the foam flowers have opened.

The heuchera is promising to take over the world. Just two weeks ago it was smaller than the primrose. Lilies are beginning to emerge in the same pot.

Otherwise, a very lazy Sunday. We are both nursing dastardly colds and will stay home. The Frenchman built me an avant garde house of butter to cheer me up.

But I may have to plant something, later.

How can one not, on a day like this? Maybe I need more lettuces...

...sh...the mockingbird is silent!

  3. Hi Marie:

Sorry you're not feeling well. Thanks for your reply. Can you tell me what kind of botanicals you use for vodka? I so enjoy your posts and look forward to the book. Thanks, again. Angela Muller

  4. So beautiful. So sorry to hear about your cold -- I have one too that has eradicated my speaking voice. A silent Sunday. Perhaps we can pass it along to the mockingbird.....

    1. Thank you. What a great idea. If I can catch the mockingbird, I'll cough on him.

  5. Nice to see your strawberries getting flowers already. We haven't spotted any flowers but there's been plenty of green. Hope you feel better!

  6. Walked by your place on the way to Hillside dog park on this beautiful morning...thought of you high up in the sky. Glad to hear your not letting your cold get in the way of your gardening. Was out puttering in my little potted garden this afternoon...looking at all the little shoots emerging. Hope you feel better!

  7. Thnx, vicarious spring. Love the photog's. Drooling over the little radishes.

Frosty Robins here, but they sing (and sing, and sing) anyway. Weekend indoor gardening only - larger pots for tomatoes, kale, broccoli, cauliflower, cabbages, and Japanese indigo (a summer vat or two of blue dye). Also planted seed for Coreopsis Tinctoria (orange dye), madder (red - amazing that madder is completey hardy here in the Canadian Foothills!) and bush cucumbers.

Only tiny chives so far for outdoor harvesting. Compote from frozen Saskatoon berries for yogurt topping.

    Cheers,
    Trevor
