Sunny side up

Fried bananas by M Viljoen

Eggs and fried bananas. Not pictured is the organic bacon roasting in the oven. The Frenchman remained unconvinced. I grew up with bananas for breakfast as a special treat. Perhaps it is an acquired taste. Is it South African?

  1. I love eggs like this, though never tried it with bananas. You make everything look so good.

  2. Here I thought my husband was the only person who roasts bacon in the oven. Can definitely imagine the bananas with eggs being good, especially since I don't mind when maple syrup get over mine. One of my favorites is a fried peanut butter and banana sandwich. "Thank you very much.":)

  3. OMG! Heaven! I, too, grew up enjoying fried bananas, and have made a believer out of my once skeptical husband. Has M. Beence been convinced?

  4. Bananas are fantastic fried, I just don't necessarily like dipping them into egg yoke... ;-) I draw the line with marmite!

  5. I like the banana and bacon combo, rather than with the eggs, but as you can see, I don't mind if they touch.

Monica, I like the roasting 'cos then there's nos pattering and smoke on top of the stove. And the pieces stay super-straight! Also nice to add herbs like thyme, which pop and jumpo in the pan, stovetop.

  6. Have you ever had a banana and sour cream omelet? Don't laugh until you've tried it.

  9. Nope, not just South African. Grew up with bacon, eggs, grilled tomato and fried banana. Yum! Haven't had it in so long - I miss it!

  10. I love fried banana! Have wonderful memories of "skottle-braai" breakfasts camping in the Drankensburg when we were young. I agree that cooking bacon in the oven is the way to go. I could never get the bacon crispy on the hob without burning it. I also love roasting cherry tomatoes with olive oil and fresh rosemary to go with everything. Delicious!
