Seeing red - cardinal vine in October

The cardinal vine keeps putting out more and more flowers. Ipomea x multifida is an annual in our Northeastern climate, taking off in warm weather. I'm not sure I'd recommend it for any region where the winters do not freeze. It can be invasive.

It did its job, feeding at least one hummingbird (I like to think there were dozens more, when we were not looking!), and is giving me a lot of pleasure in the last hurrah days of the growing year. It is also contributing enormously to the success of our birch pole privacy screen.

"Where did the sun go?"

Soon, I'll be asking that, too.

And in other local news, thanks to the Urban Garden Center for stocking my book, 66 Square Feet - A Delicious Life. It's nice to know it's in the hood!

  2. Beautiful red. Great photos too. I'm sorry you are having your last hurrah. My 2nd growing season has just begun. Will be planting winter veggies tomorrow morning.

    1. What did you plant, Deborah?

I sowed fava beans and peas a couple of days ago. That's as wintery as I get. Curious to see how the peas do. May not be enough sun, but in spring the favas did quite well.

    2. Chives, red beets, peas, Botanical Interest Salad Bowl Blend lettuce, and a funky little carrot from B.I. Tonda di Parigi. And of course some flowers for beneficial insects. The smell of compost, aged steer manure and soil is such a turn on.

  3. Beautiful. I lament the approach of winter as well...but here in upstate we're seeing some of the year's most splendid array!

  4. How did the climbers you had in Brooklyn do over here? I think you had at least different varieties of clematies and Gloriosa lily..

    1. Hi Carmen - the purple flowers there are lablab beans.

You'll find the climbers if you scroll through the Harlem terrace posts:
