The Rosarian

June roses at the BBG.

From my interview for ShelterPop with Sarah Owens, who curates the Cranford Rose Garden at the Brooklyn Botanical Garden...

In what USDA zone were you born?

I grew up in the same zone (as the BBG) - 7 - in the foothills of the Great Smoky Mountains in Tennessee. But it would warm up two to three weeks earlier than in New York and stay warm for two or three weeks longer in autumn.

What is your favourite garden chore?

Pruning.

What is your least favourite garden chore?

Using blowers and other gas powered machines.

Where would you like to garden?

I would love to garden in the Mediterranean or really anywhere with a milder winter.

(Sarah sent some of her answers in from Morocco, where she was on vacation.)

  1. Can you please explain to us non-Americans what a zone is. I saw you referred to it in a previous post too.

  2. Hi Ansie - sorry to answer your question so late.

There are 11 USDA (United States Department of Agriculture) Plant Hardiness Zones, defined by average minimum temperatures in each zone. A plant is then described as being 'Hardy to Zone 4', for example, meaning that it can withstand and survive the average minimum temperatures in Zone 4. If you live in the States you can tell what zone you live in by looking at the USDA Plant Hardiness Map.

    Here is the 2003 version:
