There is something about a Martini
A tingle remarkably pleasant;
A yellow, a mellow Martini;
I wish I had one at present.
There is something about a Martini,
Ere the dining and dancing begin,
And to tell you the truth,
It is not the vermouth -
I think that perhaps it's the gin.
From A Drink with Something in It, Ogden Nash
Except that with us it's vodka, though I am prepared to defect again: I may revisit gin. It reminds me of the Chanel No. 19 that I wear. Not sure that's a good thing. Wouldn't want to start swigging from the Eau de Toilette...
I was given Secret Ingredients, The New Yorker Book of Food and Drink, by Vivian at Christmas. It's a wonderful collection of food writing, which I have just started reading, and the above is from Roger Angell's Dry Martini, circa. 2002
"I introduced Vince to martinis. They are a remarkable marriage." Hmm, who's a remarkable marriage, garlic olives and martini, or martini and Vince? ;-)
