Watermelon and feta salad

For a summer evening: and this should not wait around. Though the juice that accumulates is pretty delicious...
Equal parts, chunks of: watermelon, cucumber, feta
Optional: red onion, sliced thinly, radish, basil
A light dressing of red wine vinegar, into which a dash of salt and sugar are dissolved, black pepper, the teeniest slosh of EV olive oil, thoughI prefer none, in this case.
Soapbox: a lot depends on the feta. I went through every feta I could find in South Africa, becoming more rancourous with each rejected bite. They were chalky, dry, blegh. I want feta to be firm, but creamy; crumbly, but creamy; salty, but creamy...Sahadi's French feta has spoiled me for life.

  1. LOL. In other words, feta should be creamy. :-)

  2. Yes. It must be creamy, but creamy. Yet crumbly. And salty, and a little sour. But creamy!

  3. Marie this salad is summer perfection, isn't it. We have watermelon chilling in the downstairs cooler and "creamy" feta upstairs. I know what we're going to have this weekend!
I love your blog, by the way. :)

  4. Thank you, Mary! The idea to me, living in a tiny apartment, of having the watermelon downstairs and the feta upstairs, is very exciting, :-)

Oh, and I'll be having salmon...:-)

  5. South African feta - bleagh/yuck indeed! Will save recipe for concocting on other shores.

  7. Jane, but wait! Kalk Bay's Harbour House has a Greek Salad - and that feta is delicious! We asked them who supplied it and I believe they said it was locally supplied but imported cheese - Maybe you can make friends with them...

  8. And you make friends with them, don't forget to ask for a creme brulee! The best, or second best in the world!

  11. What a great salad, it looks so refreshing. I love watermelon so I am very keen to try this. I see you have used black pepper, I smother all my food with the black stuff, I love it and I believe it is very good for you too. x
