Ready for their close ups

It's so brief: Dry sticks in winter; new, tender red growth in early spring. Green leaves. The tiniest buds. Weeks of waiting, and pink slits as the buds begins to open. The first rose. A party. Then the second, then all of them; the petals are falling. The last buds have opened into saucer-wide flowers. The camera comes out. So do the pruners, to deadhead, to prepare for the second flush. For these few hours of beauty.

  10. Beautiful and worth the wait!!!
My Icebergs are having a rough go. I planted two root bare last fall and only one made it. I bought a potted one to replace it about a month ago and it has been growing like crazy, but no buds yet. The other bare root one was doing fine, but now its leaves are being eaten by something. Oy! Happy that my other roses are doing well.

  12. Wow. Wish your terrace could be photographed from across the street for another view. Anyway, very beautiful. With so many lovely plants, the space must feel a lot larger than it is.

  13. Beautiful photos. The color and shape of the flowers are just exquisite. I'm starting a climber 'Eden' in my Brooklyn garden this year. It's my first climber, but your post gives me hope it will be a success!

  14. re:"It's so brief"...I think the brevity is the soul of beautiful blooms. You know they won't last and you have to stop and soak it up. Anything beautiful feels like that to me. The transience of it makes my heart burst.
