Begonias, beautiful again


I have long suffered from a begonia prejudice. I am getting over it.

They are at their peak right now in Cape Town - in early autumn, and on my mom's terrace in high shade (under an awning), their variety is spectacular.

How do you feel about begonias?

  3. For years I thought of them as boring and suburban, but I recently visited the Lyman greenhouses near Boston, where they had marvelous varieties and I totally fell in love with them. The delicate flowers combined with the many colors and shapes of foliage are enchanting. I brought home four of them!

  4. I adore begonias, especially the rex varieties, but seem unable to make them thrive. I have better luck with the cane-stemmed varieties, with their leaves resembling the wings of angels and dragons.
