Watsonia coccinea, after fire

From the top of Ou Kaapse Weg the other day we noticed that there was a patch of bright pink up on Silvermine. Watsonias. The area had burned recently.

We drove up there late in the afternoon and bundu bashed (bushwacked) to the spot, following a faint path, ducking under tall protea branches, dodging spiderwebs and accumulating an interesting collection of scratches on our ankles and calves.

In the burned area we stepped carefully, taking pictures. There were a lot of new plants growing, many Bobartia indica (below) in bloom, scatterings of Moraea and a fern whose name I have forgotten..

We came home cross hatched with charcoal and smelling of fynbos and smoke.

  1. Dear Marie,
What an extraordinary time for you to be home. Sending my deepest condolences to you and your country. The whole world is grieving and remembering Nelson Mandela.
