The Rockaways in late winter

The colours on the cold beach were grey and pale blue and silver and lead. A full moon, and the tide far out.

There were six other people on the endless beach in the few hours that we were there. Two girls, taking pictures, a man on a bike, taking pictures. A couple, trying to revive a tired horse shoe crab whose last wish was to expire, and an old man, jogging.

The beach on this Saturday turned out to be a pale respite, a beautiful silence. A perfect gift for the birthday of the Frenchman who longs for empty mountains and wide ocean.

After our lunch of baguette, and butter and saucisson and red wine we walked back into the dunes.

We'd not seen this end of the beach when we visited last summer (when it was hothothot)

Good movie set.

No signs of plant life yet except this, back in the grassy area though which we approached and left the beach: a little cranesbill. Some reading reveals it be...edible! Fancy that. Erodium cicutarium.

We will try to get back in mid spring, when plants are doing interesting things.

  1. I never knew cranesbill was edible. It's just a weed around here! I might have to give it a try now.
