Park Slope Prairie

Yes, I ate them.

Happy blueberry hedge. They like acid so we added a bale of peatmoss to their planting medium (we planted on the hottest day of the year, last July. It was interesting).

Lythrum (loosestrife - the pink flower); Panicum virgatum (panic grass); Rudbeckia (black-eyed Susan/daisy). The loosestrife is this beautiful but invasive presence in our area. You often see it crowding streams and river banks and it's lovely but deadly: chokes other plants out, annoys the foodchain, etc. So I feel a bit guilty putting it here. True, it is confined, and is nowhere near a waterway, but it's conceivable that the seeds can be windspread. Today it had bumblebees knocking into it and getting drunk in its flowers.

Rudbeckia and Miscanthus (maiden grass)

What I love about what I do: I designed this garden last spring, and I come back a year later and everything is growing, fluffing out and doing what it is supposed to do. This is all on the seventh floor of an apartment building in the Slope, very high winds, windchill in the deep minus Fahrenheit, but the rudbeckia is very happy and threatens to take over. Bees browsing through the flowers, all very satisfying...
