Silas Mountsier and  Graeme Hardie's remarkably different and beautiful gardens - across the road from each other - will be open to ticket-holding members of the public.

Silas and Graeme are hosting this open garden day in honor of their friend Betty Scholtz, who turned 90 this year. The funds raised will be donated by Betty to the Brooklyn Botanic Garden, the garden to which she has dedicated her life for the last 50 years. The BBG suffers from the financial pressure that is affecting parks, gardens, museums, libraries, art, culture. And Betty, as the ambassador she has always been for this public garden, would like to help. Tickets will cost $15 at the door.

Interestingly I just discovered that Richard Hartlage, who designed both Silas and Graeme's gardens, is also the designer of the much-lauded new Herb Garden at the Brooklyn Botanic Garden. For fans of the herb garden this will be a rare opportunity to see his work in two private spaces owned and inhabited by two very different people, whose personalities speak quite clearly in their respective gardens. Crossing the street from one to the other is rather like crossing an ocean to step onto a new continent.

Come and see for yourselves, and please spread the word to anyone who may be interested. Plant geeks, design junkies, tree and art lovers will all be quite happy.

  1. That would be so great - not gonna happen, but I would surely love to see them both! Hope they raise a lot of money for the gardens. A great - and generous - idea.
