August crops

Up on the roof, the first watermelon and eggplants were ripe, so were picked. The cherry tomatoes ripen hourly, it seems, except the Red Pear, which has been a bust. Out it will come this weekend.

Summer savoury, all self-seeded from last year.

No matter what has happened during the day, hoisting myself up onto the roof to give everything a drink in the evening washes it away. It is my Great Plains, my prairie, my only mountaintop. There is always wind off the water. Things are different up there.

The strawberries are getting ready for round...four?

And out in New York Harbor people are messing about in boats.

For more about life in and on and near the water in these parts, read The New York Times City Room series A Week on the Water. There are some interesting errors, but also good stories.

  1. What happened to your Red Pear tomatoes? Did they not fruit?

Aside from some problems with early blight, mine is going crazy right now.

  2. I completely relate to the enthusiasm you have towards your rooftop (and you phrase it so much better than I could have ... " my Great Plains, my only mountaintop ..." love it!)

  4. The plants appear to feel the same way about the roof as you.

  5. DG - the three plants stayed quite small, yielded about 5 fat, thick-skinned tomatoes each, and now just sit there, sulking.

Lambert - ah yes, and you have le deck chairs :-)

Frank - yes! Now where can I get more vegetable seedlings for inappropriate August planting?

Unknown - I think they are happy, mostly. Sun.Breeze. They have a view...

  6. Marie: I would be more than happy to share the Red Pear seeds that I have with you if you want to give it another shot; I don't think I'll be planting them next year as I plan on devoting more space to bigger varieties.
