The Commute

I forgot about this. Hard to imagine why. This article reminded me.

On the subway platform at Bergen Street, as I was walking down it the other night, on my way home, I saw a man running towards me with his right arm in the air, screaming.

OOOOOOAWAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAGH!

Big white dude, eyes tearing up a little, in apparent agony, but not threatening.

As he passed me, arm raised high, it was obvious what was in his hand: a live lobster, claws waving.

I don't know.

  1. Are you going to blog whilst away? I will SO miss these blurbs of life in NYC. Stuff like this just doesn't happen in Nashville.

  2. Hey Mary - or, Hail, Mary? :-)

I will blog from the southern tip, but it sure won't be NYC'ian. A bit suburban, a bit rural, some wild.

The lobster thing was great, even for New York.

  4. Hilarious, but was he faking or for real? After all, the subway is a strange place where people might go as far as bringing a beach towel and sun umbrella and lay down in a swim suit... ;-)

  5. MIT - maybe the blag cad can hack Paulo, his Brazilian minder's, compudhair...

Beence - One suspects Lobster Man was putting on.

And that's the thing, because it IS New York, people are expected to do strange things, it's embedded in our collective movie and word psyche, so it can become a perfomrmance space of sorts. But you can never be quite sure.

I mean, I've ridden the subway wearing a hat festooned with plastic chickens, with a black bandido mask painted on my face, carrying ahandbag out of which more chickens were spilling, and no one looked at me twice!

Still, there was a picturesque and real homeless lady sleeping on the same F that left me at the Lobster Platform, whose bright bits of ribbon adorning her voluminous garments, whose beaded bracelets and shiny green nailpolish, almost made the healing cut on her upper left cheekbone seem a piece a stage make up.

There is a lot to contemplate.
